Head On, Apply directly to the... oh forget it

Here's another view. Since it has a square top I told him he could wear it sideways to look like he has ears. I informed Aaron I thought he looked cute in this picture (he thinks he looks dopey). Anyway, I like it.
Oh I busted my plastic size 5 needles on this project. It was about time I guess, I've had that set of plastics since I was 14 and the smaller ones seem to be breaking quite easily now. Time to get me some bamboo or metal. Oh, much thanks to Kristi who loaned me a stitch holder.

Aaron's Mosaic Hat

Here it is (finally). the bright color of the varigated yarn really shows. I decided to do it in garder, I didn't much like the way it looked in stocknit. Plus garder seemed to make for a thicker fabric.

Archie's Mosaic Coat

Well this is my first mosaic knit. I made it into a little coat for Archie. Doesn't he make a fine little model? He doesn't like looking into the camera much though. I think I might next try loom knitting some of the slipper socks that Kristi suggested. My last loom project (a baby blanket) got turned into a bathmat, but it's a very nice bathmat and was far too thick as a baby blanket so no complaints.

Amber's Banana Berry Hat

Here's Amber in her hat. I must admit I do enjoy working with fun fur. So far I haven't had to pay for it... wonder what will happen when I run out.

Oh! something useful...

With this free graphing site you can upload images and it will graph them for cross stitch or knitting for you. Very handy.

Here She Is...

Doesn't she look adorable in it? I love the way the fun fur frames her face. I've also started a bit of loom knitting with the knifty knitter looms. I loomed a banana berry hat for Amber with a bit of fun fur in the rolled cuff (I hope to get a picture of her in it later). I'm currently looming a baby blanket in blue. I may be adding a sage green crochet edge to it afterward as the ends tend to curl a bit. Hmmm... tends to curl. We truely are knitting models of the universe. Reminds me of Kristi's mobius straps. Anyway, I was thinking. If you can do ribbing on a loom, and you can switch between two colours, then there's no reason you shouldn't be able to illusion knit on a loom, though the design would have to be quite large. Pretty cool, an optical illusion in a loom knit garment... worth a thought.

Honey Comb Hat

Well, I gave up on the Alphabet baby blanket, bit too complicated really, and decided to make a honey comb hat for Savanna. The bees were solid glass so I sewed on little yellow buttons and superglued the bees to them. I added a a little off white yarn to the very end (I was running out of yellow and I wanted more of a cuff) along with some white fun fur. I used the same combination to put a line of crochet along the bottom of the cuff. I think it turned out rather well.

Shake, Shake, Shake. Shake Your... well you know

And here are my little green booties. I showed them to the mother-to-be and she seemed pleased. I've started work on an alphabet baby blanket. Hopefully I'll have a pic of it in progress soon.

Amber's Wonderful Textures

I love Amber's scarf so far, though you can see some of the texture here the picture doesn't do it justice.

Kristi's Quiver

Here's Kristi's project. A quiver to be felted and worn across the back. It's looking great so far. She's really inspired me to try felting something, not sure what yet...

Enter the Raven

Well I finally got around to posting again, it's been an interesting summer. And here's Kristi's little cutie Raven. Isn't he adorable? He looks a bit surprised.

Savanna's Poncho

The poncho is done. She seems to like it, though she kept searching for sleeves...

Lace Topper

Well my computer is finally back up and running. There is a freeze up now and then but you can't have everything. This is my latest creation, a domino knit lace topper for my jewelry box. I think it turned out quite well. I'm also working on a domino knit ponch for my niece Savanna. Looking good so far.

Oh, I found this artical in Discovery magazine and I thought Kristi might like it. Apparently a mathematician is crocheting models of hyperbolic space in three dimensions. Pretty cool...

Hat's done

Well I finished the hat first, big surprise huh? Aaron says I look a bit crazed in this pic so sorry 'bout that, but I love the way it turned out and showing it just lying there wouldn't have done it justice. I have a banana berry hat WEEEEEEEEEEE!

Our First Meeting...

...and I forgot my camera. I had alot of fun though, thanks guys. A big thanks to Kristi who let us have it at her house, I do hope Christopher gets to feeling better. I've been fiddleing with the edging idea for my hat... I'll put up a photo when I finaly pick one and finish it. I'm going to go ahead and try an I cord again on my own (from memory unless I scanned something in on the computer, better check that), but if I can't manage it I may be calling on Kristi for help. Oh and thanks again Amber for the yarn, you didn't have to do that, it was so sweet. :)

School Daze...

I'm still working on the gloves (nearly done), and the shrug (about half way), and um... a hat I just started yesterday. But I just had to stop and do this. It's a little varsity sweater for Barbie (just got the pattern from a book on Ebay. I think it turned out well, and it didn't take much time to do. The pattern was fairly simple to read which always helps. I love the little white stripes on the sleeves, and the v neck was surprizingly easy to do. Well, it will be a nice little thing for Savanna when she gets back from California.

YEAH! a new member!

Cool, good to see you here Smiley! If you like I can get pics for you and send them to you via Email. The pictures you posted are so sweet.

Well this is a look at my latest project, fingerless gloves, yes I know I still have the shrug I'm working on but I'll get back to it. These have been fun so far. I may make a matching hat and a thin scarf if there's enough yarn. :)

Mom's Gift

Well I've finished mom's scarf, short and sweet. I think she's going to like it. I decided to skip the hood. I'll still get practice in on that someday, but I have to admit that the hood was probably more me than her. Here I am, still trying to push the things I like on other people. Well at least I'm aware of the problem, that's got to count for something right? Anyway, this is my first post in awhile that hasn't involved something doll related ('bout time too).

Archie's Here....

Well I made another one for Archie, and look it even has a little R for Riverdale (yeah, I know, I'm a little strange). Savanna's Betty and Veronica dolls came with school outfits in white and blue with yellow trim so I thought, why not? I put up an offer on Ebay to custom knit them to buyers color specifications and with the letter of their choice (they only take about 6 and 1/2 hours to complete so no biggie, and I get faster with each one). I think it could be fun if they catch on, but even if they don't I'm still having a pretty good time with these. Oh, nearly done with my mom's scarf. Should have a pic up soon.

This is an addiction!

Well I tinkered with the pattern a bit. It's a much better fit now. I made one for West Valley Highschool (this time the colors are in the right places). It's been a lot of fun. I need to adjust it down further if I'm going to make one for a girl though. Aaron suggested I sell the pattern on ebay... maybe, but I think I'll work on it a bit more first. The letter is a glass bead iron on, I could only find them in black and white, though I suppose they could be painted.

So I lied...

Well I did just one more, a letterman's jacket, but I did it in worsted so no eye strain... and boy did it go quick. I made the pattern up myself and kept track of it as I went along. Although I was told afterward that traditionaly the darker color is on the chest not the sleeves. Still, I'm quite pleased with the way it came out. I've seen some cute little iron on varsity letters at a craft shop that looked like they just might be the right size, I may pick some of those up. I still haven't sewn on the snaps or any other embellishments, but Savanna seemed to like it. The knit was on size 2 and 4 needles which made the fabric stiff. Just what I was hoping for as this was supposed to be a jacket and not a sweater. I used a knit cast on for the front panels and the back and I used basicaly the same type of ribbing on the waist, cuffs, and collar. I may do one for Barbie, not sure just yet.

Ken's Sweater

OK so it's not Ken.... it's Archie Andrews. I'm prettty pleased with the way the sweater came out. Though I do feel it's a bit long in the waist. Still, I try my best to follow a pattern the first time through then make adjustments on future projects. Well, I didn't really stick with that rule here either, the neck was originally supposed to be a pop up collar. I wanted to try a turtle neck.

It may be a little while before I do another piece for a doll. Though the payoff is quicker, my eyes are starting to bug out on me.

Babes in Toyland

Well I finally broke down and started knitting some doll clothes (I know, I know... way too many irons of the fire, but I get bored working on just one project and I've discovered that working on doll clothes gives you that "I've finished" buzz just that much faster). Since I've been babysitting my almost three year old neice Savanna we seem to have aquired quite a few barbies and I thought I might give it a go. The first skirt I did is the purple one on the left. It was also the second internet pattern I have ever used. It's not bad, but even working on #3s and using fingering yarn the skirt looks a bit bulky. I mean, I like the cables, but it gives barbie a serious case of tank butt. The second skirt in the mixed color yarn I just made up on my own. I think it turned out rather well and it fits a bit better on the waist. Well that's it for now... I think I'll tackle a doll sweater next.

(Shrug)

Well I finally broke down and started knitting a shrug. No pics yet as there really isn't enough of it to show. I'm not sure yet if I'm a shrug wearing kind of gal, I guess we'll see when it's finished. It also happens to be the first pattern I've ever gleaned from the net. The picture looked lovely and I just so happened to have the color and yarn type needed so I thought why not? We'll see how it goes.

It's a Bird! It's a Plane...

Well I finally finished the Superman scarf for Aaron. There he is next to my dressmaker's dummy modeling it by the way. If he looks a bit tired it's because I finished it up at around 2:00am and was so excited that I insisted I snap a pic of him in it right away. He loves it, which is good because it took far longer than I thought it would to complete it, I'd be a real bummer if he didn't care for it. I finished it just in time too, we've been reaching about 30 below or lower now outside and it's a good time to start bundling up. I did a nice lace triangle edge on the ends to finish off.

Domino... Domino

Arrrggg, I hate that old 80s song. But it just popped into my head and it doesn't seem to want to leave. I finally got my hands on Domino Knitting by Vivian Hoxbro. I had to put it on hold on the library and the person who had it checked out was late returning it, but now it's mine ALL MINE! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!

Actually it's quite good. I knit my first square last night. I wasn't quite sure how it was going to work so I just got started and it came off the needle diagonally! It was so cool, I'm definatly going to try some more of those. What really caught my attention with this book (aside from the exceptional patterns) is the fact that Vivian has her own friends modeling the items. I guess when you write the book you get to pick and choose. It was so great to see models that looked like real people, very refreshing! I hope to do a few more squares today and figure out how you knit them together.

Inspiration

I'm always amazed by the things that inspire us. The magazine photo was very 1950s, but I instantly felt that this was something I wanted to knit. It was only after repeating the cable pattern about three times that I realized I was knitting it for my mother. It seemed to flow quite naturaly after that. I'm not quite sure how I'll manage the hood, I've never done one before and in the picture it looks a bit... elfin. Still, I believe it's something she'd like so I'll try to keep as close to style as possible. I've toyed with the idea of making the scarf longer than in the picture, and I might, at least a little. But if there's one thing I've learned it's that you should give gifts that suit the person who's actually recieving them, not the person you imagine them to be.

It was something of an epiphany for me when I finally realized that my mother's taste was always going to be different from mine. I remember it finally sunk in while we were staying in Hawaii for Christmas. I was going to get her what I thought was the perfect gift (I can't remember what it was, probably jewelry) when it occured to me that she was never going to use any of the things I got her. So I started to think about the kind of things she got for herself. Usually they were brown, (it seemed to be her favorite color) and if it was clothing she generally prefered it to have embroidery on it. Definitely not my style, but it was what she liked so I got her a brown leather eelskin cigarette case. She loved it, and ended up using it until it started to fall apart at the seams.

Well the scarf is purple, (her second favorite color). Here's hoping she likes it just as well.
