It works nicely as a hood, or a neck warmer...
And it can even snug down over the shoulders nicely.
So if anyone is interested, here's the pattern.
Easy Bulky Raspberry Cowl
Knit flat
2 skeins of Loops and Threads Charisma in Black Raspberry
Size 15 US needles
Cowl is knit using two strands of yarn, both skeins used at the same time. I tried to line up the two strands so that the color changes occurred at the same time.
Gauge: 8 stitches over 4 inches
Cast on 62 stitches
Do 5 rows in stockinette stitch, starting and ending with purl rows.
Then knit the next 47 rows in stockinette stitch starting and ending with purl rows.
Then knit the last 5 rows in stockinette, starting and ending with purl rows.
Sew a seam up the side in mattress stitch, from purled end to purled end. Weave in ends.

I think it should say stockinette or stocking stitch instead of
"stock knit" stitch.
Also, I'm confused as to why you've split the instructions
into 3 sections: 5 rows, 47 rows and 5 rows. Doesn't this
work out to just doing the whole piece in stocking
(or stockinette) stitch?
I would love to make this versatile piece as I already
have this exact yarn.

Hi, I'm 18 rows in, and have less than 1/3 of the wool left.... am I correct in reading 62 stitches,(which equal 32 inches...) it seems huge... (using 2 balls of charisma)
I tried counting the stitches in the picture and it seemed closer to 48 stitches.

I have made corrections to the pattern, sorry I was still recovering from a move across country and hadn't checked blog comments for quite a while. The needles used are size 15 US, yes I did double the yarn and yes I did cast on 62 stitches, the gauge is correct for the finished piece, and yes only two skeins of yarn were used, I even had a tiny bit of one of the skeins left over. I might just be more conservative with my yarn when knitting, I don't know. I neglected to put 'beginning and ending with a PURL row' for the middle section and had KNIT there instead, I apologize, this has been corrected. Basically the whole cowl is in stockinette but it's going from a purl row to a purl row when going from section to section in the pattern that gives it it's look. The beginning and ending rows (the first and last sections) are simply the "wrong" side, or purl side, of the stockinette fabric. I hope this helps :)
Trying to figure out how many yards of yarn. I have two skeins of Loops & Thread Charisma and they are 60 yds each...it seems as though this is not enough yarn for this project...please clarify

Hi I'm trying to knit this and my needles only fit 31 paired stitches is that what you mean unless I need longer straight needles

A simple pattern made confusing by the instructions. Needs to be rewritten in terms that make sense.

Otherwise, if it's too confusing for people, instead of being rude about your FREE pattern and the time you've given, they can move on to something else. I, myself, thank you for your time and the pattern. I have this very same yarn and I just may tackle it! :) Btw, what was the yardage you had on your skeins of ysrn... or the total yardage needed?

For those who would prefer easier directions, I would suggest the following:
Cast on 62 stitches. Entire piece is work in reverse stickinette stitch (first row is purl and second row is knit). . Start and end with a purl row. Knit to desired length. Cast off on 2nd row (a purl row).
Sew seam lengthwise.
I used 5 balls of Loops and Threads Charisma yarn in 109 yds/3.5 oz (or 100 m/100 g). This made a cowl of 27 inches.
3-14-2014: This is so lovely. I'm going to make one soon, after my next trip to Michaels. Thank you for such a good idea. I don't print patterns out much so I just wrote the instructions & made 3 little sketches of it from your photos. I love charisma yarn, but I never would have thought of double stranding.
